Azteca
Established as the national horse of Mexico, the Azteca is quickly becoming a popular breed. Azteca bloodlines blend Andalusian blood with Quarter Horse blood to create a handsome and versatile breed. Such blending endows the Azteca with the strength of both breeds to produce an intelligent, noble, athletic and agile horse that excels in nearly all riding disciplines.
Aztecas are exciting because they are easy to breed and are beautiful animals to show and enjoy. Because the breed is comparatively new, infusions of Andalusian and Quarter Horse blood are not unusual. Azteca breeders have established an extensive but unique and specific table to denote the percentage of Spanish and American blood, and therefore differentiate different levels of Azteca breeding. Azteca D (First Generation) is the beginning to breeding an Azteca A (Third generation, purebred). With enough crosses, Azteca A’s can be bred. One interesting note: If a C is bred to an Andalusian, not only is the result a purebred A, but is also registerable as a Half Andalusian. Live A’s with this breeding qualify to register with IALHA (International Andalusian and Lusitano Horse Association) and compete with Andalusians and Half-Andalusians. Historically, such horses have been very competitive in this arena!
The Easiest Step…
To Breed and Azteca D, cross a Quarter Horse and an Andalusian. Though it makes no difference, there seems to be a prepotency to breed an Andalusian Stallion to a Quarter Horse mare. Breeding a Quarter Horse stallion to an Andalusian mare is, of course, just as effective.
Second Generation
Quarter Horse x Azteca D =Azteca C (1/4 Andalusian, 3/4 Quarter Horse)
Andalusian x Azteca D = Azteca B (3/4 Andalusian, 1/4 Quarter Horse)
Third Generation (Purebred)
Azteca C x Andalusian = Azteca A (5/8 Andalusian, 3/8 Quarter Horse)
Quarter Horse x Azteca B = Azteca A (3/8 Andalusian, 5/8 Quarter Horse)
Azteca B x Azteca C = Azteca A (1/2 Andalusian, 1/2 Quarter Horse)
Azteca B x Azteca D = Azteca A (5/8 Andalusian, 3/8 Quarter Horse)
Azteca C x Azteca D = Azteca A (5/8 Andalusian, 3/8 Quarter Horse)
Azteca A x Azteca A = Azteca A
Azteca A x Andalusian = Azteca A
Azteca A x Quarter Horse = Azteca A
I have tried to rate the aztecas below with their appropriate letters, though I had to guess at some. A few of the pedigrees were given to me by a friend so, in some cases, the dilution of Spanish and American blood is unknown.
